A mosque in Texas has been destroyed in a blaze, which broke out just a few hours after President Donald Trump signed an executive order which bans immigrants from entering the US if they are from seven, mostly Muslim, nations.
It is understood that a clerk working at a nearby convenience store spotted the smoke and flames billowing from the Islamic Center of Victoria in the early hours of the morning. Fire crews were called out, and spent hours fighting the fire to put it out.
Images after the blaze reveal that the dome at the top of the mosque has been totally destroyed. According to the president of the Islamic center, Shahid Hashmi, the moque’s imam woke up in the early hours and decided to check online surveillance, discovering that the alarm had been deactivated and the doors had been unlocked.
It is the second time the mosque has been targeted in the space of a week. Just a few days ago, there was a break-in in which thieves got away with electronic equipment, including laptops.
The shaman was worried when he realised the mosque was unsecured in the latest incident and decided to take a drive there to check whether everything was okay. When he arrived, fire crews were already fighting the blaze. Hashmi said the fire had been huge, and it was desperately sad to stand and watch the mosque burn.
Thankfully, no one was injured in the blaze, but an investigation has now been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Fire officials in Victoria will be working with the Texas Fire Marshal’s Office and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to find out how the fire broke out.
So far, authorities have said that it is too early to speculate on whether the fire could have been deliberate.
