A sick 70 year old has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after flying out to California with the intention of abusing a young boy. Paul Charles Wilkins was caught in a sting operation by undercover agents, who duped him into thinking he was arranging to meet a nine-year-old boy in the Coachella Valley.
The pensioner, from Littleport in Cambridgeshire has already tried to meet two boys last year, but his plan collapsed and he was arrested. Prosecutors told a court that Wilkins, who has dual UK and US citizenship, headed up a twisted online group for paedophiles. He had admitted to travelling to America for the purpose of having sex with two young brothers.
When his initial plan collapsed, he then tried to find another youngster, and offered to pay him $250 if he came to a flat he was renting. However, on this occasion, there was no child. The meeting had actually been set up by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Wilkins has pleaded guilty to a charge of transporting child pornography from the UK to the US, including graphic sexual images of boys between the ages of five and eight. He has been handed a 13 year jail term and a fine of £20,000 after appearing at court in Los Angeles. He will also be placed under a supervision order for the rest of his life.
Following the sentencing, Joseph Macia, who is the special agent in charge for HSI Los Angeles said he hoped that given Williams’ age, the jail sentence would ensure he no longer posed a sexual threat to young people. United States Attorney Eileen Decker said the sentence would make sure children were protected from his abuse. The children’s charity NSPCC has also urged anyone who is worried about child sexual abuse to speak out.
